Spicy Herring
Ingredients
- approximately 300 g herring fillets à la matjas in oil*
- 1 cup water
- 6 peppercorns
- 1/2 small onion
- 1 small chili pepper
- 2 cm fresh ginger
- 1 clove garlic
- 1/3 cup rice vinegar (or regular vinegar)
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 1 tablespoon oil
Preparation
- Prepare the marinade: bring water to boil with peppercorns.
- Remove from heat and immediately add thinly sliced onion, chili pepper sliced into thin strips (without seeds), peeled and sliced ginger, and peeled and sliced garlic.
- Add rice vinegar, sugar, and oil, stir, and then let cool completely.
- Remove herring from packaging and cut into small pieces.
- Layer the herring with the cold marinade in a jar or glass container. Close and refrigerate for approximately 1 day. Store in the refrigerator for up to 1 week.
Tips
* herring fillets from a tray, already rinsed, in vegetable oil
If using herring "from a barrel" that is salted, you must rinse them first, as described in the country-style herring recipe.
