Thai Tom Yam Soup with Shrimp
Ingredients
- 1 liter water or broth
- 30 g tom yum paste*
- 100 ml coconut milk (optional)
- 1/3 can diced tomatoes
- 100 g canned Chinese mushrooms (straw mushrooms)
- 200 g cleaned shrimp
- 2 tablespoons fish sauce
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
and
- chives, cilantro, chili pepper, optionally - Thai basil
Preparation
- Pour water or broth into a pot, add tom yum paste and bring to a boil. Add coconut milk, tomatoes and drained and halved mushrooms, cook for about 5 minutes.
- Add cleaned (from shells, tails and intestines) shrimp. Cook for about 1 minute over low heat. Season with fish sauce and lemon juice.
- Add chopped chives, cilantro leaves, chopped chili pepper and Thai basil leaves if available.
Tips
* can be bought ready-made or make your own from the following ingredients:
1 tablespoon oil, 1 shallot, 1 lemongrass, 1/2 teaspoon chili powder, 1 teaspoon tamarind, 1 clove garlic, 3 cm piece of galangal, 1 teaspoon cane sugar

Briefly fry diced shallot onion in oil, pour in 1 liter water or broth, bring to a boil. Meanwhile add halved lemongrass, chili powder, tamarind, halved garlic clove, sliced galangal and sugar.
